God is not the Grand Canyon

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

I think so many times our idea of God is like the Grand Canyon. He is huge. He is jaw-dropping. He is stone.

We come to see Him as cold granite. Yes, He is our rock but He is not made of it. And He is certainly not vast in the sense of distance. Oh, He is certainly greater than we can fathom but He isn’t far, viewed only through binoculars.

God is near to us. He is there, here. Now.

Even more so, when you feel all alone, He is closer than ever. When the world has forgotten you, has abandoned you, has hated you, He comes and enfolds you within the arms of love. When we be most wretched, when we need Him most, He is there.
